Return of El Soldado

UPDATE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL OCTOBER 11

September 6th, please join us in welcoming El Soldado back to his home in Sacramento’s Capitol Park.

Originally dedicated in 1951, the California Mexican American Veterans Memorial statue, known as El Soldado, serves as a testament to the service and contributions of all Hispanic/Latino veterans.

Over the years, maintenance on the statue was deferred and the statue was damaged. For more than two decades, members of California’s Latin-American veteran community have worked to raise more than $200,000 necessary to restore El Soldado.

The statue was removed from his pedestal at the corner of 10th Street and Capitol Mall one year ago. The statue spent several months at Ruhkala Monument in Rocklin where experts fixed his broken rifle and cleaned off years of dirt and mold.

Shortly after the statue’s removal, CalVet and the Department of General Services began a yearlong expansion project of the memorial’s plaza. Improvements include enlarging the pedestal and installing pathways connecting the memorial to a new sidewalk that runs along the California State Treasure’s office building.

Phase one of this long-awaited beautification project is now complete. Please join us at 11:30 a.m. on September 6, 2017 for the rededication ceremony. For more information and to RSVP follow this link.

    Good evening,
The Veterans Resource Center at my College received a message regarding the cancellation of this event, is it correct or not? I have made my arrangements to attend and would like to make sure since I live 7 hours from the event site.
